Singles Day 2026 falls on a Wednesday, 11 November. Black Friday follows 16 days later, on 27 November. For many online shops that is the real question: is a separate promotion day worth it so close to Black Week, and if so, with which mechanic?

This guide explains what Singles Day is, how German online retailers played it last year and how to plan 11/11 so it does not get in the way of your Black Friday. The examples come from newsletters of German online shops that Reyo captured in November 2025. We describe the shops by category, not by name.

What is Singles Day?

Singles Day comes from China. In the 1990s, students celebrated 11 November as a day for single people; the four ones in the date stand for four singles. In 2009 the Alibaba Group turned it into an online shopping day, and in China it has since grown into a shopping festival lasting several days.

In Germany, Singles Day is a fairly young occasion. It competes with two traditions on the same date: St. Martin's Day and the start of the carnival season at 11:11 am. For online retailers it is above all the first big promotion date in November, a good two weeks before Black Friday.

Singles Day or Black Friday: is the day worth it for your shop?

Last year, almost one in three shops whose newsletters we captured in November 2025 played Singles Day. Conversely, two thirds skipped it. Both can be right. These questions help you decide:

  • Does your range fit? Fashion, beauty, sports and electronics are well represented on 11/11. For furniture, groceries or specialist ranges the day comes up less often.
  • How young is your audience? Singles Day mainly speaks to younger customers, where the "treat yourself" message fits best.
  • How much margin do you have in November? Discounting broadly on 11/11 and again in Black Week means giving away margin twice, often to the same customers.
  • What role should the day play? A test run for Black Friday, a loyalty moment for regulars or a revenue day of its own? Each role calls for a different mechanic.

If you can't find a clear role, skipping the day is a good decision. The inbox on 11/11 is full, and an interchangeable percentage email gets lost in it.

When the market starts

Singles Day is a short occasion. Last year the first emails arrived one week ahead, almost three quarters of all Singles Day emails went out in the last three days, and more than two in five on 11/11 itself. Many landed in the inbox in the early morning hours; some shops followed up with a second email in the evening.

The aftermath stands out: individual shops extended their promotion by a day, and one announced on 12 November that the voucher "stays valid". That is fine if it is planned. But if you extend every year, you teach customers that the deadline isn't meant seriously.

For 2026 that means: a teaser on Monday, 9 November, the main email on Wednesday morning, 11 November, and a reminder in the evening are enough for most shops. A Singles Week spanning several days can work, but it moves very close to the start of Black Week.

Which mechanics appear in German retail

The number in the date: 11 and 22 percent

Almost one in three Singles Day emails last year used a number from the date. 11 percent and 22 percent are the classics, plus some more creative variations:

  • A beauty retailer offered an extra 11 percent on "2 × 11 star products".
  • A fashion retailer promised "111 deals, today only".
  • A furniture retailer delivered for free on 10 and 11 November above a basket value of 411 euros.

What to take away: The date number makes the occasion instantly recognizable, even without the term in the subject line. But it is also interchangeable. If everyone gives 11 percent, something else decides.

Club and membership

Several shops used Singles Day to strengthen their loyalty program instead of discounting across the board:

  • A sports retailer promoted "Become a club member now" and gave 11 percent to members only.
  • An outdoor retailer tiered the offer: 11 percent for everyone, 15 percent for logged-in club members, above a minimum order of 150 euros.
  • A fashion chain offered up to 40 percent on selected items, but only for members, only in the app and online shop, from 40 euros and excluding sale items.

What to take away: Singles Day is a good moment to win new members before Black Friday. Whoever signs up on 11/11 is already in the club two weeks later in Black Week. More mechanics are in our guide to customer retention in e-commerce.

App exclusivity and time windows

Other shops split the day into time windows:

  • A beauty retailer ran an app countdown in which the discount dropped over the day: 12 percent until noon, 11 percent until 6 pm, 10 percent until midnight.
  • A pet supplies retailer gave 11 percent on everything, but only between 6 pm and midnight, online and in the app.
  • A fashion chain granted an extra 22 percent on reduced items, redeemable only in the app.

What to take away: A narrow time window creates urgency without raising the discount. And app-exclusive benefits move customers into the channel you control.

Without percentages: gifts, shipping, 2 for 1

Not every Singles Day email works with percentages:

  • A beauty retailer added a "Singles' Day bag" with samples from a 10 euro basket.
  • An online pharmacy promoted "buy 2, pay 1" on selected double packs.
  • A fashion retailer combined free shipping with a gift bag from 35 euros.
  • A fashion shop assigned the discount at random at checkout, up to 30 percent.

What to take away: Mechanics without percentages stand out in a crowded inbox and protect the reference price for Black Friday.

Tiers by basket value

A fashion retailer tiered automatically in the cart: 10 percent from 100 euros, 20 percent from 200 euros, 30 percent from 300 euros. An electronics retailer used fixed euro amounts, tiered from an order value of 100 euros. Tiers raise the basket instead of just lowering the price.

Checklist: Singles Day 2026 in six steps

  1. Decide by mid-October. Take part or not, and which role the day plays next to Black Friday.
  2. Pick a mechanic that differs from Black Friday. Club, app or gift instead of the same discount level that arrives two weeks later anyway.
  3. Narrow the audience. Existing customers and club members first, new customers via club sign-up.
  4. Set the timing. Teaser on 9 November, main email on the morning of 11 November, reminder in the evening. Extend only if it is planned from the start.
  5. State the conditions clearly. Excluded brands, minimum order value and combinability belong visibly in the email. In Germany, price reductions must also show the lowest price of the previous 30 days. Plan your October prices so that Singles Day and Black Friday don't spoil each other's reference price.
  6. Watch your competitors. The week before 11/11 shows who takes part, with which mechanic and from when. It is also your best hint for Black Week.

Common Singles Day mistakes

  • A mini Black Friday. The same discount level as in Black Week teaches customers to wait for 27 November.
  • Starting too early. A Singles Week from early November stretches the discount phase until Cyber Monday to almost four weeks.
  • Extensions as the default. A deadline that moves every year loses its effect.
  • Unclear conditions. Long exclusion lists in the small print lead to frustration at checkout.

How Reyo supports you on Singles Day

Whether you take part on 11/11 also depends on what your competitors plan. Reyo shows you before your plan is final:

  • Competitor Monitoring captures who announces Singles Day, with which mechanic, conditions and duration.
  • Market Predictions show from previous years in which week the market's run-up is likely to begin.
  • Campaign Planner puts Singles Day, Black Friday and Cyber Monday side by side so your promotions don't weaken each other.

What the weeks until Black Friday look like overall is covered in Black Friday 2026: 12 weeks from kick-off to send. The Q4 Guide 2026 gives you the overview of the whole fourth quarter.

Conclusion: 11/11 needs a role of its own

For German online retailers, Singles Day is not a must. It pays off when it gets a job of its own: winning new club members before Black Friday, strengthening the app or testing a mechanic. As a smaller copy of Black Week, it costs margin and attention that will be missing two weeks later.
